Patty
Christiena Willis, Author/Illustrator
Patty
Christiena Willis’ MA in medieval French drew
her to Japan to research Heian period literature 22 years
ago. One of her first theater works was “When the
Woman Who Loved Insects Hid”, a one-woman play performed
with koto and shakuhachi at Noh theaters
and festivals in Japan, the U.S. and Scotland. A
later work in Japanese, Yugetsu, won an Izumi
Kyoka playwriting award.
After discovering a love of brushes and ink stones in a calligraphy class, she
found that making pictures was the perfect way to see the next step of a written
work. Saving an old house from ruin and her relationships with the villagers
and forest animals inspired her first illustrated novel for children, The
Village Above the Stars.
